Pune Man Dies by Suicide in Camp Area, Names Political Candidate in Note
Camp, 4th January 2026: A 56-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Pune’s Camp area on Saturday, triggering political ripples amid the ongoing civic election campaign. The deceased left behind a suicide note naming a political candidate and alleging harassment, prompting police to begin an investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Sadiq alias Babu Kapoor, who reportedly ran an office in the Camp area. Police said Kapoor was found hanging inside his office premises. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, including one portion reportedly written on his hand and another on paper.
According to preliminary information, Kapoor alleged in the suicide note that he was being harassed by a candidate. The note reportedly mentions the names of multiple individuals. Police sources said the suicide note includes the name of Farooq Inamdar, a Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) candidate from ward 41, against whom serious allegations have been made.
Sources familiar with the matter said Kapoor was allegedly involved in a dispute over five gunthas of land in the Syed Nagar area, and the ongoing dispute may have contributed to the extreme step. Police are examining whether the land dispute had any direct link to the allegations mentioned in the suicide note.
Police officials also confirmed that Kapoor had faced action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the past, and his background is being verified as part of the probe. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances leading to the suicide and the authenticity of the allegations mentioned in the note.
