Pune’s Shivajinagar–Baner and Pashan Flyovers Near Completion; Major Traffic Relief Expected
Pune, 7th January 2026: Commuters in Pune are on the verge of a long-awaited respite from traffic congestion as the Shivajinagar–Baner and Pashan stretches of the city’s double-decker flyover project approach completion. Authorities have confirmed that approximately 90% of the construction work is complete, with phased openings anticipated by the end of January for the Shivajinagar–Baner section and February for the Pashan stretch.
Stretching approximately 1.76 kilometres, including all ramps, the flyover features a 1.3-kilometre main bridge, a 55-metre steel girder at University Chowk, and direct connectivity to Senapati Bapat Road via dedicated ramps. The lower deck of the double-decker structure is designated for vehicular traffic, while the upper deck will carry the Metro line, making it one of Pune’s most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent years.
The integrated flyover at University Chowk forms a key component of the Man–Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro corridor, executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). A senior PMRDA engineer noted that the project was specifically designed to ease chronic congestion near Savitribai Phule Pune University and Ganeshkhind Road, areas long plagued by traffic bottlenecks.
The first phase of the project, connecting Aundh and Shivajinagar, was inaugurated on August 20 last year by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and has already improved peak-hour traffic along Ganeshkhind Road. With the remaining stretches nearing readiness, authorities expect smoother traffic flow across the entire corridor.
Officials said the pending work primarily involves finalising access ramps. The Shivajinagar–Baner ramp is scheduled to open by late January, while the Pashan-side ramp is expected to be operational by the end of February. Minor adjustments, such as modifications to a utility pipeline near the Pashan ramp, are being addressed to ensure full functionality.
Once operational, the flyover is expected to significantly reduce travel times for commuters moving between Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner, and Pashan. Vehicles from Aundh and Baner heading towards Shivajinagar will enter via two-lane ramps merging into a three-lane bridge, while traffic from Shivajinagar towards Baner and Pashan will use a three-lane ramp splitting into two-lane exits. Road surfacing on the Shivajinagar–Baner side has already been completed, ensuring readiness for the upcoming traffic.
With full operations imminent, Pune commuters can look forward to faster, smoother, and more predictable journeys, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban mobility development.
