SPPU Student’s Eardrum Perforated After Alleged RPF Assault at Pune Railway Station
Pune, 8th September 2026: A 27-year-old digital media student of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has alleged that he was assaulted by Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawans at Pune railway station after he started recording an incident in which passengers were allegedly being beaten near the station entrance on August 25.
The student, identified as Ronit, has alleged that RPF personnel forcibly took his mobile phone, assaulted him and dragged him to the RPF post on Platform 1, where videos recorded on the phone were allegedly deleted. He has further alleged that despite repeatedly approaching the Pune Government Railway Police (GRP) station and Bundgarden Police Station (Pune City Police), his complaint was not registered.
Medical records from Sassoon General Hospital indicate that Ronit sustained an injury to his left ear. An ENT examination conducted on September 8 found a small traumatic perforation of the left eardrum, with the student reporting pain, reduced hearing and persistent ringing in the ear.
According to Ronit’s account, the incident occurred at around 11 p.m. on August 25 when he saw RPF personnel allegedly beating passengers who were sleeping near the station entrance. He said he questioned the personnel and began recording the incident on his mobile phone.
Ronit alleged that an RPF personnel subsequently grabbed him and took away his phone. He claimed that he was verbally abused, beaten and dragged into a room before being taken to the RPF post on Platform 1.
He further alleged that he was assaulted inside the RPF post and that the videos he had recorded were forcibly deleted from his mobile phone.
Ronit also claimed that some of the passengers involved in the incident were beaten and were bleeding heavily. He said he sustained the ear injury during the alleged assault and subsequently experienced persistent ringing and reduced hearing.
The initial medical examination at Sassoon General Hospital reportedly found a blood clot in his left ear canal, while the left eardrum could not be visualised at the time of examination. A subsequent ENT examination on September 8 recorded a “traumatic small perforation” of the left eardrum.
When contacted, Pune Railway Public Relations Officer Hemant Kumar Behera said he was not aware of the incident. He said the railway authorities would verify the information and take appropriate action.
