Purandar Airport to Be Built to Meet Future Needs of Pune: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai/Pune, 3rd February 2026: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that the Purandar airport project be developed keeping in mind the future needs of Pune city, as rapid infrastructure growth and urbanisation continue to reshape the region.
Pune and its surrounding areas have emerged as major investment destinations due to fast-paced development of infrastructure, leading to increased industrial activity and accelerating urban expansion. In this context, the Chief Minister said the construction of the Purandar airport is essential to meet the long-term requirements of the city.
Reviewing the progress of the Purandar airport project at the Varsha residence, Fadnavis instructed that land acquisition be completed within a fixed timeline through the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) so that the project can move into a major development phase without delay.
He also directed that a structured funding mechanism be finalised for the airport’s development. MIDC has been asked to complete the remaining land acquisition process, while agencies such as CIDCO and the Urban Development Department were told to clearly define their responsibilities and ensure effective implementation.
The Chief Minister said that once the airport is operational, the surrounding area is expected to emerge as a “development zone”. In view of this, CIDCO has been asked to ensure land availability in the region at an early stage to support planned growth.
Fadnavis further stated that the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), which is responsible for airport development in the state, should be strengthened in capacity and entrusted with all ongoing airport projects in Maharashtra. He also instructed that a proposal regarding the funding pattern for the Purandar airport be brought before the next Cabinet meeting.
At present, joint measurement of 1,216 hectares of land in the proposed area is to be completed. A report on the joint measurement and objections received from landholders is to be submitted to the government, the Chief Minister said.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) O.P. Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) Sanjay Sethi, Principal Secretary (Industries) P. Anbalagan, the Chief Minister’s Investment Advisor Kaustubh Dhavse, Managing Director of MADC Swati Pandey, and MIDC CEO P. Velarsamy. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi joined the meeting via video conference.
Land acquisition for the Purandar airport is currently underway in seven villages in Pune district — Vanpuri, Kumbhar Valan, Udachiwadi, Ekhatpur, Munjwadi, Khanwadi, and Pargaon. For each village, land acquisition officers of the rank of Sub-Divisional Officer and Deputy Collector have been appointed to oversee the process.
