Pune: PMC Plans Rs 5.3 Crore Fleet Purchase for Elected Office-Bearers Ahead of New Civic Term
Pune, 7th February 2026: As Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) prepares for the formation of a new general body after nearly nine years, the civic administration has moved to modernise the official vehicle fleet for key office-bearers. The PMC’s Motor Vehicle Department has proposed the purchase of 28 new vehicles for senior elected representatives at an estimated cost of Rs 5.30 crore.
The proposal will soon be placed before the Standing Committee for approval. Once cleared, the procurement process is expected to begin.
Vehicle Allocation Plan:
Under the proposal, different categories of vehicles have been earmarked for various civic posts.
Mayor to Get Toyota Innova Hycross:
For the Mayor, regarded as the city’s first citizen, the administration has proposed the purchase of a Toyota Innova Hycross SUV, equipped with advanced features and enhanced comfort. The estimated cost of this vehicle is Rs 25.41 lakh, and it will be designated for official use.
Deputy Mayor, Standing Committee Chairperson, and House Leader to Receive Hyundai Verna
Sedan-class Hyundai Verna cars have been proposed for the Deputy Mayor, Standing Committee Chairperson, and Leader of the House. Each vehicle is expected to cost approximately Rs 14 lakh, and separate cars will be allotted to each of these office-bearers.
SUVs for the Opposition Leader and City Improvement Committee Chairperson
The Leader of the Opposition and the Chairperson of the City Improvement Committee are proposed to be allotted mid-size SUVs, identified in the proposal as Maruti “Victorious” models, at an estimated cost of Rs 15.65 lakh per vehicle.
Grand Vitara for Ward and Special Committee Heads
In addition, the proposal includes Maruti Grand Vitara SUVs for 15 Ward Committee Chairpersons and several Special Committee Chairpersons, with each vehicle costing around Rs 14 lakh.
Move Linked to Formation of New Civic Body:
The vehicle procurement plan comes as the PMC prepares for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor on February 9, alongside the near-completion of the city’s new council hall. Officials say updated transport arrangements are necessary to ensure smooth administrative functioning once the new set of elected representatives assumes office.
Funding Questions Raised:
Civic officials have stated that the earlier fleet used by former office-bearers has aged significantly during the prolonged period of administrator rule and is no longer in usable condition. However, discussions have begun within political circles over whether the 2025–26 municipal budget includes a clear provision for this purchase.
This has led to questions about whether funds for development works might be reallocated to cover the vehicle expenses. The municipal administration has yet to issue a formal clarification on the funding source.
