Pune, 12th February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a citywide drive to repair and upgrade footpaths to make them safer and more walkable for residents. The initiative has drawn praise from industrialist Anand Mahindra, who commended the civic body’s efforts.

In a post on social media platform X, the PMC said it aims to repair all damaged footpaths in the city by December 2026. The project focuses on creating safe, accessible and pedestrian-friendly walkways. The civic body also stated that under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, the corporation is undergoing a phase of transformation.

Reacting to the update, Mahindra said he was pleased to see the PMC taking concrete steps to improve the city’s sidewalks. “Good to see PMC taking firm steps to fix and upgrade sidewalks across the city,” he wrote.

Mahindra also referred to an earlier post from November in which he highlighted how well-designed footpaths can significantly improve urban life. He pointed out that such projects require relatively lower investment and less time compared to large-scale infrastructure works.

“Sidewalks are not an alternative to roads; they are the democratic levelers of a city,” he had said. He added that better footpaths lead to safer streets, more walkable neighbourhoods, healthier citizens and stronger local businesses.

A ‘footpath-first’ approach in urban planning, he noted, places people at the centre of development.
