Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited Reports Rs 8.6 Crore Savings for Pune Consumers Under TOD Scheme
Pune, 17th Fbruary 2026: Close to 10 lakh electricity consumers across Pune have received substantial relief in their power bills through the Time-of-Day (TOD) metering system, with cumulative savings exceeding ₹8.6 crore over the past seven months, officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said.
Between July 2025 and January 2026, consumers with TOD meters benefited from discounted daytime tariffs, receiving a 80 paise per unit rebate for electricity consumed between 9 am and 5 pm.
Out of the total 39.71 lakh electricity consumers in the Pune Circle, 9.84 lakh have already been fitted with advanced TOD meters. The installation is being carried out free of cost, and authorities have urged residents to cooperate with field teams to accelerate the rollout.
Officials indicated that the existing 80 paise per unit rebate may soon be increased to ₹1 per unit, further increasing consumer savings. However, only consumers with TOD meters installed are eligible for the concession.
Solar Energy Enabling Lower Tariffs
MSEDCL attributed the discounted tariff to the growing share of solar energy in the state’s power supply mix. Since solar generation peaks during daytime hours and is comparatively economical, the utility is passing on the benefit to consumers through reduced daytime rates.
Authorities said the initiative not only reduces electricity bills but also aligns with the state’s clean energy transition goals.

The Pune Circle comprises three major divisions:
Ganeshkhind Urban Division

Among the three, Ganeshkhind Urban Division recorded the highest savings during the period.
Amid reports of hesitation in certain areas over meter installation, MSEDCL officials clarified that TOD meters ensure accurate billing and do not inflate electricity charges.
“Consumers should not fall prey to misinformation. Bills will reflect actual consumption and will not increase unnecessarily. We request citizens to extend full cooperation to our installation teams,” said Sunil Kakade, Chief Engineer, MSEDCL Pune Circle.
Officials reiterated that wider adoption of TOD meters would enable more households to benefit from reduced daytime tariffs while supporting sustainable energy usage across the region.
