Maharashtra: New Land Record Initiative Aims to Simplify Farm Ownership Data
Pune, 20th February 2026: In a significant move to streamline land records and improve access to agricultural benefits, the Maharashtra government has ordered a special statewide drive under Section 85 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Act, 1966, to record each co-owner’s share of land separately in joint agricultural holdings.
At present, when farmland is jointly owned by multiple account holders, the total land area is often recorded against the name of a single holder in the 7/12 extract. However, while generating a Farmer ID, the entire land area of the joint account is reflected under each co-holder’s name, creating technical inconsistencies and administrative complications.
Officials said accurate land area records are mandatory for generating the Farmer ID, which functions as a unified identification number for availing benefits under various agriculture department schemes. To address these discrepancies, the Revenue Department has decided that the precise land share of each co-holder will now be recorded individually in official land records. The government resolution formalising the decision has been issued.
Campaign framework and implementation:
Special camps will be organised at taluka and circle levels to facilitate account division.
Co-holders will be required to submit applications in a prescribed format.
Instructions have been issued to simplify and expedite the process of account separation.
Benefits for farmers:
Each farmer will receive a unique identification number based on their exact land share.
Direct access to benefits under all agriculture department schemes.
Reduction of technical hurdles during land transactions and mutation entries.
The state aims to ensure maximum farmer participation in the campaign and accurate recording of individual land shares in the e-crop inspection system. Officials said the initiative is expected to reduce confusion in land dealings, crop surveys, and scheme implementation while enhancing transparency and efficiency in agricultural governance across Maharashtra.
