Pune Metro Expansion: Shivajinagar to Yewalewadi Line Expected To Become Operational By 2030–31
Pune, 2nd March 2026: Residents of south Pune, particularly in Kondhwa and Yewalewadi, may soon get major relief as MahaMetro has proposed an expansion of the Pune Metro corridor from Shivajinagar to Yewalewadi. If all statutory approvals and surveys are completed on schedule, the new metro stretch is targeted to become operational by 2030–31, officials said.
According to MahaMetro officials, the proposed Shivajinagar–Yewalewadi corridor will be an elevated metro line of approximately 20 kilometres. The project is expected to significantly improve daily commuting for residents of south Pune while also helping reduce traffic congestion on major roads.
Officials said the proposed extension is planned as the next phase of the 23-kilometre Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar metro corridor. The Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar project is being implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) model and is seen as a crucial link connecting Pune’s IT hub with the city’s central areas.
The Kondhwa–Yewalewadi–Yewalenagar section of the proposed route will be executed directly by MahaMetro. In addition, a proposal is under consideration to extend the corridor further towards Undri through an additional spur line. If approved, the metro network will directly serve fast-growing suburbs such as Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, Yewalenagar and Undri.
Another important aspect of the proposal is the planned connectivity of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar metro line to south Pune via Camp and Pulgate. This is expected to provide direct and faster access between Pune’s old city areas, central business districts and southern suburbs.
MahaMetro officials said that once final approval is granted, work on the detailed project report (DPR), along with environmental and technical surveys, will be undertaken before construction begins.
With south Pune witnessing rapid population growth and increasing traffic congestion, transport experts believe the Shivajinagar–Yewalewadi metro extension could play a key role in improving urban mobility in the coming years.
