Pune Woman Software Engineer Duped of Rs 42.64 Lakh in Matrimonial Scam, Accused Arrested
Pune, 3rd March 2026: A 28-year-old software engineer from Hinjawadi was allegedly cheated of ₹42.64 lakh by a man she met on an online matrimonial website, in a case of cyber fraud and marriage scam that has shocked the city.
According to police, the accused introduced himself as Jayesh Patil and claimed to be working with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He expressed his intention to marry the woman and gradually gained her trust through regular conversations.
The victim, who works with a reputed IT company in Hinjawadi, had created her profile on the matrimonial platform in November 2024. During this period, she came in contact with the accused. He even visited Wakad to meet her in person, further strengthening her confidence in him.
Police said that after winning her trust, the accused began demanding money on the pretext of purchasing property for their future together. Believing his claims, the woman transferred funds in multiple instalments between November 2024 and January 2025. A total of ₹42.64 lakh was transferred to the accused’s bank account during this period.
Suspicion arose when the accused continued to demand more money. Upon verification, the woman discovered that he was not employed with ISRO as he had claimed. Realising she had been duped, she approached the police and filed a complaint.
Following the complaint, police initiated action and have so far frozen and recovered ₹16.65 lakh. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining ₹27 lakh.
During investigation, police revealed that the accused’s real name is Adarsh Mhatre, a resident of Alibag in Raigad district. He has allegedly cheated several other women in a similar manner. Police have arrested him and said that he used part of the defrauded money to gamble at casinos in Goa.
