Pune, 16th March 2026: The state Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson and Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe has written to Deputy Chief Minister and Pune district guardian minister Sunetra Pawar, raising concerns over the slow pace of tourism development in Pune district and seeking immediate intervention to address the issue.

In her letter, Gorhe said that several historic and cultural sites in the district have witnessed a decline in tourist footfall due to lack of coordination between the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the local administration. She claimed these sites have inadequate basic facilities.

The Shiv Sene leader pointed out that Shaniwar Wada, once among the most visited heritage sites in the city, has seen a drop in the number of visitors. The monument had recorded around 14.24 lakh visitors in 2017–18, but the number has declined in recent years. The suspension of the light-and-sound show at the site due to technical issues and lack of funds has also affected tourist interest, she said urging the authorities to resume it.

Gorhe further said that tourist numbers at Lohagad Fort have also fallen by nearly 40 per cent. Similar decline in the revenue has been reported at heritage sites such as Karle-Bhaje Caves and Aga Khan Palace, she said.

According to Gorhe, delays in obtaining ASI permissions for development or repair work have hindered efforts to improve infrastructure at these sites, resulting in lack of facilities such as drinking water, roads and modern toilets for visitors.

She urged the guardian minister to take steps to initiate steps to preserve Pune district’s cultural heritage and promote local employment through tourism development.
