Speeding Car Overturns Near Lonavala on Pune-Mumbai Expressway, 3 IIT-Bombay Students Killed
Pune, 19th March 2026: Three students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay lost their lives after the car they were travelling in overturned on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Lonavala on Thursday morning, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Omkumar Borse (23) from Nashik, Lay (20) from Nagpur, and Shreyansh Sharma (22) from Jaipur. According to officials, the three were part of a group of six students who had visited Lonavala and were on their way back to Mumbai when the accident took place around 9:30 am.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the car lost control overtaking a heavy vehicle due to high speed, leading to the vehicle overturning on the expressway near Panvel exit. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted several times, leaving it mangled and the occupants remained trapped inside.
Police said they received an alert about the accident through the emergency helpline 112, following which teams were immediately dispatched to the spot. Rescue personnel shifted the injured to a nearby facility, where three of them were declared dead.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the accident, officials said.
