Pune, 25th March 2026: The death of a 35-year-old man in Pune has sparked controversy over emergency healthcare practices, after his family alleged that treatment was delayed due to a demand for an advance payment at a private hospital.

The deceased, identified as Pravin Hanumant Mhakse, was admitted to Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital, where relatives claimed that doctors sought a deposit of Rs 50,000 before initiating full treatment. The family alleged that this delay worsened his condition, ultimately resulting in his death.

Following the incident, the Pune Police have registered a case against two doctors on charges of negligence. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the sequence of events and determine accountability.

A committee report from Sassoon General Hospital has reportedly pointed to lapses in handling the case by the hospital staff. However, the hospital has denied the allegations, stating that all required procedures were followed.

The incident has reignited debate over the practice of seeking advance payment before treatment in private healthcare facilities. Citizens and activists have raised concerns about patient safety and ethical responsibility in emergency situations.

Authorities said further action will be based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
