Wakdewadi: New Flyover Proposed from Sakhar Sankul to Old Mumbai–Pune Road
Wakdewadi, 9th April 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the construction of a new flyover between Sakhar Sankul near the Agriculture College and the Old Mumbai–Pune Road to ease traffic congestion in the Shivajinagar area. The project is expected to significantly reduce the daily traffic jams witnessed between Agriculture College and Sancheti Hospital.
The stretch between Agriculture College and Sancheti Hospital experiences heavy traffic congestion every day, affecting office-goers, students, commuters, and even patients travelling to nearby hospitals.
Considering the persistent traffic problem, the PMC has planned to build a flyover connecting Sakhar Sankul to the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway.
The proposal has been prepared by the PMC’s Special Projects Department, and the project has already received budgetary approval. The estimated cost of the flyover is around Rs 61 crore.
Officials said the flyover will be constructed in a ‘Y’ shape. One arm of the flyover will descend towards the Mumbai-bound side of the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway, while the other arm will connect towards the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) side.
Once completed, the flyover will allow vehicles travelling from Namdar Gopal Krishna Gokhale Road to directly access the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway instead of passing through the busy Sancheti Hospital junction. This is expected to provide smoother connectivity for vehicles heading towards Mumbai, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Yerawada, the Pune Airport, and the Nagar Road area.
The project is also expected to ease traffic congestion on Ganeshkhind Road, in Shivajinagar, at Sancheti Chowk, and around the Sakhar Sankul area. In addition, the flyover will improve connectivity between the Shivajinagar ST Bus Stand and Railway Station with the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway.
According to PMC officials, the flyover will pass over the railway line and connect the road between Sakhar Sankul and the Old Mumbai–Pune Road up to the COEP side. It will also integrate with the underpass at Narveer Tanajiwadi to streamline traffic movement.
Dinkar Gojare, Head of the Special Projects Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation, said the flyover will help reduce congestion at Shivajinagar and Sancheti Chowk. He added that commuters travelling from Ganeshkhind Road and Fergusson College Road will be able to directly access the Old Mumbai–Pune Road once the project is completed.
