Pune, 15th April 2026: In a major relief for families affected by Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) atrocity cases, the Maharashtra government has approved direct government employment for 889 eligible beneficiaries.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for Social Justice Madhuri Misal during a programme organised on the occasion of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary. At the event, appointment letters were handed over to 18 beneficiaries from Pune district.

The programme was attended by MLA Bapu Pathare, Social Welfare Commissioner Deepa Mudhol-Munde, Joint Commissioner Pramod Jadhav, Regional Commissioner Vandana Kochure, and Assistant Commissioner Vishal Londhe, among others.

Speaking at the event, Misal said that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, provides for financial aid and rehabilitation of victims. The Act has been implemented in Maharashtra since 1995 and has been amended multiple times. Under the 2016 amendment, families of victims who lost their lives in atrocity cases are eligible for either government employment or financial assistance.

Officials stated that between 2012 and 2025, a total of 320 cases were addressed through rehabilitation measures. These included 44 government job placements, 266 pensions, one land allotment, and 10 housing benefits. However, due to procedural ambiguities, the number of job allocations remained limited.

To address this, the state government has decided to clear 889 pending cases as a one-time measure by offering appointments in Group D government posts. The decision is expected to provide financial support and stability to affected families.
