Pune: Old, Rusted Hoop Blamed as Police Book Tolani Maritime Institute Officials including Principal in Cadet Death
Pune, 16th April 2026: Nearly ten days after a fatal accident at Tolani Maritime Institute in Talegaon in which 20-year-old student was killed, police have booked four office-bearers of the institute, including its principal, for alleged negligence leading to the death of a cadet.
The case pertains to the death of Vishal Verma (20), a resident of Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh, who suffered fatal injuries after a basketball hoop structure collapsed on April 5. The incident occurred around 7.20am on the institute’s sports ground.
Initially, an accidental death report (ADR) was registered at Talegaon MIDC police station under Pimpri Chinchwad police, and a detailed inquiry was initiated. Investigations later revealed that the basketball hoop structure was old and rusted, and had not been properly maintained, police said.
Based on the findings, the victim’s brother, Ashok Verma, filed a complaint, following which an FIR was registered against four individuals associated with the institute. Those named include principal Sanjeet Kanungo, along with officials responsible for ground maintenance, sports activities and overall management. Police said efforts are underway to identify the other accused.
According to police, Verma had gone for a run and later moved to the basketball court. While attempting to hang from the rim of the hoop, the structure reportedly gave way, causing him to fall and sustain a severe head injury. He was rushed to Talegaon General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
An officer from Talegaon MIDC police station said a case has been registered under section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing death due to negligence. Further investigation is underway.
Following the incident, several cadets had gathered at the site, demanding a thorough probe and alleging lapses in maintenance and safety.
