Pune: Four-Member Committee to Probe Child’s Death During Eye Surgery at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital
Pune, 23rd May 2026: The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation has constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the death of a six-year-old girl during an eye surgery at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital.
The committee includes superintendent of Kamla Nehru Hospital Dr Prashant Bothe, along with medical officers Dr Smita Sangade, Dr Kiran Mhankale and Dr Aarti Kadam. The panel has been directed to submit a preliminary report within seven days.
The order in this regard was issued by Assistant Health Officer Suryakant Devkar.
The deceased girl, identified as Priyanshi Bagde (6), a resident of Supa in Ahilyanagar district, had been admitted to the hospital for an eye surgery. She died during the procedure, triggering demands for action against the hospital administration.
Taking cognisance of the incident, the civic health department had earlier issued a notice to the hospital and sought all related medical documents, treatment records and details of the surgery. The hospital administration was instructed to submit all case papers and medical records related to the incident within 24 hours.
According to civic officials, the hospital has since submitted the patient’s complete medical summary to the PMC administration.
Officials said the inquiry committee includes two paediatric specialists and an anaesthetist. The panel has been asked to conduct a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and submit its report within a week.
