Pune, 26th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has warned of legal action against census staff who attended training sessions but failed to begin fieldwork even after 10 days.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Divte said the state census office has directed the civic administration to register cases against employees who continue to delay the work. He added that one final opportunity would be given to the absentee staff before action is initiated.

The warning came during a review meeting conducted by the state census office on Monday, where Pune was found lagging behind other cities in the ongoing national census survey.

Around 1,000 enumerators appointed for house surveys in Pune have reportedly not started their work yet, affecting the city’s overall progress. Officials said several other cities have already completed nearly 70 per cent of the survey work, while Pune has managed to complete only around 40 per cent.

Under the second phase of the census campaign, nearly 11,000 enumerators and 1,600 supervisors from PMC departments, aided and unaided schools and colleges have been appointed for the survey. One supervisor has been assigned for every six enumerators.

However, officials said even some supervisors have failed to report for duty, causing delays in the process. The house survey is scheduled to be completed between May 15 and June 14.

Authorities have now directed assistant commissioners of all 15 ward offices to review the pending work and initiate legal action against employees who continue to remain absent. Officials also pointed out that similar cases have already been registered in areas such as Vasai and Virar against defaulting staff.
