Pune: PMC Sets Aside Rs 37 Crore in Financial Year to Address Stray Dog Issue in City
Pune, 26th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has earmarked Rs 37 crore in its 2026–27 budget to find a long-term solution to the rising menace of stray dogs in the city.
The information came to light through the administration’s response to a resolution moved by the Women and Child Welfare Committee. The proposed funds will be utilised for stray dog control, sterilisation, vaccination, shelter development and capture drives.
Corporators Vaishali Bankar and Amol Balwadkar had raised the issue before the committee, demanding a dedicated and adequate financial provision for controlling stray dogs. In its reply, the administration said sufficient funds have already been allocated and no additional provision is required.
According to officials, Rs 31 crore has been set aside for sterilisation surgeries and vaccination of dogs and cats. An additional Rs 1.20 crore has been sanctioned for setting up dog pounds and veterinary clinics. A further Rs 5 crore has been reserved for expanding infrastructure and increasing the number of dog pounds to strengthen capture operations.
Data shared by the administration showed that under the Universal Animal Welfare Society, 1,40,081 dogs were vaccinated between April 2025 and February 2026. In addition, awareness programmes on rabies reached 63,372 students and 2,060 teachers across 209 schools.
In compliance with Supreme Court directives, three locations have been identified for setting up mega shelters to house stray dogs picked up from sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, bus stops and railway stations. The sites include Shindewadi Octroi Naka, Bhugaon Octroi Naka and Ramtekadi Industrial Estate in Hadapsar.
Construction and repair work at these shelters has already begun. Officials said the initiative will significantly strengthen infrastructure for stray dog control and is expected to improve public safety in the city.
