Pune, 7th June 2026: Citizens and animal rights activists gathered outside Fergusson College on Sunday to observe the 16th National Animal Rights Day (NARD), joining a global movement dedicated to promoting compassion and justice for animals. The event was part of a worldwide campaign observed in more than 250 cities across 50 countries.

Around 100 participants attended the programme, which began with a memorial ceremony honouring animals that have suffered due to human exploitation. Activists displayed placards, conducted awareness activities, and interacted with passersby to highlight the importance of animal welfare and the ethical treatment of all living beings.

A major highlight of the event was a human chain formed along Fergusson College Road, where participants stood together in solidarity with the animal rights movement and called for greater public awareness about animal welfare issues.

Citizens who attended the programme welcomed the initiative and emphasised the need for greater compassion towards animals.

“Seeing people from different backgrounds come together for animal welfare was encouraging. It shows that compassion towards animals is becoming an important social concern,” said one participant.

Another attendee said, “The human chain was a powerful symbol of unity and responsibility. Such initiatives help spread awareness and inspire people to think about the welfare of all living beings.”

A third participant added, “Public awareness is the first step towards change. Programmes like this encourage citizens to reflect on their daily choices and their impact on animals and the environment.”

Organisers said the event aimed to educate the public about animal rights and encourage more humane and ethical lifestyles. Participants also took a pledge to support animal welfare and promote compassion in their daily lives.

The programme concluded with a collective call for greater awareness, kindness, and respect towards animals, with organisers describing animal rights as one of the most significant social justice issues of the present era.
