RTO to Crack Down on School Buses Without CCTV Cameras in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad from June 20
Pune, 11th June 2026: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has directed schools in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad to update details of all school buses on its official portal by June 20, failing which special inspection teams will conduct physical verification and initiate action against vehicles found operating without functional CCTV cameras and other mandatory safety measures.
In an order issued to school administrations, Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad said all schools must update information related to their bus fleets on the RTO’s official school bus safety portal by the stipulated deadline. The move follows provisions under the Maharashtra School Bus Rules, 2011, and decisions taken by the Pune District School Bus Safety Committee.
Schools and bus operators have been instructed to log in to the portal and furnish details of all buses owned by or operating under contract with the institution. The portal has been updated to include new safety-related fields, making it mandatory for schools to specify the total number of buses, whether each bus is equipped with a CCTV camera, and whether the surveillance system is functional.
The RTO has warned that after June 20, special teams will carry out on-ground inspections of school buses to verify the information submitted on the portal. Any discrepancy or violation of safety norms will invite strict legal action.
The transport department has reiterated that all school vehicles must possess valid fitness certificates, insurance, tax payment records, pollution-under-control certificates and other mandatory documents. Bus drivers must hold valid driving licences and badges, while every school bus must have a functional CCTV camera and an attendant on board. Police verification of drivers and conductors is also compulsory. In addition, all buses manufactured after October 1, 2023, must be fitted with an operational fire alarm and protection system.
The RTO has also appealed to schools facing technical difficulties while updating information on the portal to contact designated officials at the Pune RTO office for assistance.
