Pune Court Jails Man for Doubting Wife’s Character and Unborn Child’s Paternity
Pune, 13th June 2026: A Pune court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to one year of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹8,000 for subjecting his wife to physical and mental cruelty by repeatedly questioning her character and the paternity of her unborn child.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Naresh Bari observed that repeatedly casting doubts on a wife’s character, questioning the paternity of her child, expressing a desire to marry another woman, and threatening to defame her in society amounted to cruelty and went beyond ordinary marital discord.
The court noted that such conduct adversely affects a woman’s dignity, social standing and mental well-being.
According to the prosecution, the complainant married the accused in a grand ceremony in Hadapsar in June 2017. Her family allegedly spent between ₹20 lakh and ₹25 lakh on the wedding and gifted her 10 tolas of gold jewellery.
About two weeks after the marriage, the woman reportedly discovered chats between her husband and another woman on his mobile phone. When she questioned him about the messages, he allegedly threatened her and warned her not to interfere in his personal affairs.
The prosecution further stated that after the woman became pregnant, the accused repeatedly questioned her character and cast doubts on the paternity of the unborn child. She also alleged that he pressured her to undergo an abortion against her wishes.
The incidents reportedly occurred between June and October 2017, following which the woman lodged a complaint with the Yerawada Police Station.
The case was investigated by Police Sub-Inspector Anil Lohar. Assistant Public Prosecutor Yogesh Kadam represented the prosecution during the trial.
After examining the evidence and hearing the arguments, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to one year of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹8,000.
