Lonavala, 13th June 2026: The last weekend of the summer vacation period witnessed a massive tourist influx into Lonavala and nearby hill stations, leading to severe traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Pune highway and key roads in the region on Saturday.

With schools across Maharashtra set to reopen on June 15, thousands of families headed to popular tourist destinations in and around Lonavala to make the most of the final weekend before the new academic year begins. The rush resulted in long queues of vehicles and traffic snarls throughout the day.

According to locals, hotels, private villas, bungalows and farmhouses in and around Lonavala reported near-full occupancy as tourists flocked to the hill station. Popular attractions such as Tiger Point, Rajmachi Garden, the Tungarli Dam area, Ekvira Devi Temple, Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, and the forts of Lohagad and Visapur witnessed heavy footfall.

The Pawna Dam region also saw a large number of visitors, particularly along the Dudhiware Khind route. Traffic police personnel and wardens were deployed at several locations to manage the vehicular congestion as roads leading to tourist spots remained choked for long hours.

Despite the onset of June, the monsoon is yet to make a significant impact in the region, with hot and humid weather continuing to prevail. Local tourism stakeholders expect visitor numbers to rise further once the rains intensify, as Lonavala remains one of Maharashtra’s most popular monsoon destinations.

Officials said managing the growing number of tourists and vehicles during weekends will remain a challenge, requiring careful traffic planning and crowd-control measures in the coming weeks.
