Pune, 22nd June 2026: Members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) staged a protest outside the Pune Municipal Corporation’s general body meeting on Monday against a proposal to hand over civic schools to a private organisation and provide Rs 25,000 per student to Akanksha Foundation for running them.

The protest was held when a proposal came up for approval in the civic body. Demonstrators raised slogans, displayed placards and attempted to enter the general body hall, alleging that the move amounted to privatisation of municipal education and misuse of public funds.

MNVS leaders questioned the need to provide additional financial support to Akanksha Foundation, claiming that the organisation has raised substantial funds through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and international donations. They also pointed out that schools receive reimbursement under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, while civic authorities continue to provide infrastructure, utilities, security and maintenance.

The student wing alleged that the proposal was being pushed despite public opposition and demanded its immediate withdrawal. It also raised questions over the civic administration’s decision to allocate additional funds to the foundation.

Warning of intensified agitation if the proposal is approved, MNVS leaders said they would oppose any attempt to privatise Pune Municipal Corporation schools or divert taxpayers’ money to private institutions.

The protest was led by Pune city MNVS president Dhananjay Dalvi and attended by several office-bearers and party workers.
