Pune Braces for Monsoon Revival Starting July 18 as Stronger Westerly Winds and Bay System Signal End to Dry Spell
Pune, 13th July 2026: Pune and its surrounding metropolitan areas are gearing up for a significant revival of the monsoon starting Saturday, July 18, marking a transition from the current dry, warm conditions. This major change is corroborated by both the latest local forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune and a meteorological analysis by Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune.
Their projections indicate that a surge of moisture-laden westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, combined with an upcoming low-pressure system, will soon bring steady rainfall back to Pune, its crucial ghat areas, and wider Maharashtra.
According to Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, meteorological models suggest that another robust wave of the monsoon is highly likely to establish itself over the state by July 20. The primary trigger for this shift is a surge in westerly winds blowing from the Arabian Sea, which are expected to become progressively stronger from July 17 onwards and persist for several days. This strong wind flow is anticipated to first activate weather systems over the coastal Konkan region and the ghats of Pune, bringing a notable increase in rainfall across these high-altitude terrains.
Additionally, Dr. Kashyapi noted that a fresh weather system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal around July 20. The subsequent inland movement of this system is projected to draw in deeper moisture, distributing widespread and active rainfall across various parts of Maharashtra next week.
The official seven-day local weather forecast issued by IMD Pune closely supports this timeline, detailing a clear two-phase weather pattern for the week. From Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17, Pune and its suburban neighborhoods—including Pashan, Lohgaon, Chinchwad, Lavale, Magarpatta, NDA, and Koregaon Park—will continue to experience mostly dry and warm conditions. The sky during these days is forecast to remain mainly clear, becoming only partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening hours. This dry spell will keep temperatures relatively high, with maximum temperatures in Pune, Lohgaon, Chinchwad, and Koregaon Park expected to climb up to 33°C by July 16 and 17. This represents a noticeable increase from the realized maximum temperature of 31.2°C recorded in Pune on Monday, July 13, while other areas like Pashan and Lohgaon registered realized maximums of 31.4°C, and the NDA station recorded a cooler 29.9°C.
However, the weather is set to shift dramatically over the weekend, starting Saturday, July 18, as the forecasted moisture begins to accumulate over the region. The IMD Pune local forecast indicates that skies across the city and its suburbs will become partly cloudy, turning generally cloudy towards the afternoon and evening, with light rain highly likely on both July 18 and July 19. This returning rainfall will bring a welcome drop in daytime temperatures, with maximums expected to decrease to 32°C on Saturday and further to 31°C on Sunday across Pune, Pashan, and Lohgaon. Minimum temperatures across the city are projected to hover steadily between 23°C and 25°C throughout this transition, offering cooler nights.
This upcoming rain is of paramount importance to Pune, particularly for its reservoirs. The ghat sections and catchment areas feed key water bodies like the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon, and Temghar dams, which supply the city’s drinking water and have been waiting for a sustained wet spell to replenish their levels. Agricultural belts in Pune’s rural districts are also expected to benefit immensely from the widespread rainfall driven by the Bay of Bengal system as it moves further inland after July 20.
