Can HCMTR Ease Pune Traffic? CM Fadnavis Reviews Ambitious Urban Transport Project
Pune, 27th July 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday chaired a high-level committee meeting to review the planning, financing, implementation and monitoring of major urban transport projects in Pune, with the proposed High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) emerging as a key focus.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Minister of State Madhuri Misal, and senior officials from the state government, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) and other concerned departments.
PMC Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram made a detailed presentation on the proposed HCMTR project. The presentation covered the project’s concept and objectives, proposed route, expected impact on traffic management, future population growth, measures to reduce congestion, financial planning, land acquisition, inter-departmental coordination and the proposed phased implementation plan.
During the meeting, Fadnavis and the Deputy Chief Ministers reviewed the project and provided directions on various aspects of its planning and execution.
According to the information shared at the meeting, the HCMTR is expected to improve the movement of traffic in Pune by providing a more efficient and future-oriented transport network. The project is also proposed to be integrated with the city’s Metro network, ring road, bus services and other public transport systems.
The meeting also discussed administrative, financial and technical support required from the state government for effective implementation of the project. Officials were directed to ensure coordination between various departments and take necessary steps to expedite the project.
The state government and PMC described HCMTR as a key project for Pune’s long-term urban mobility planning. The high-level review was aimed at facilitating coordinated planning and faster implementation of the project.
