Maharashtra Plans Pune Innovation Hub on Lines of Bengaluru and Hyderabad
Pune, 28th July 2026: The Maharashtra government has initiated plans to transform the Pune Metropolitan Region into a major growth and innovation hub on the lines of Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The proposed Pune Innovation Hub has been identified as a High Impact Initiative, with the potential to boost the state’s economy, employment and technology ecosystem.
The project will be implemented through the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which has already begun the planning process. A detailed review meeting on the draft proposal was held on July 15, with officials from the PMRDA, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the state Industries Department discussing the project’s framework and implementation strategy.
As part of the initiative, the government has appointed a consultant to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the proposed Innovation Hub. The plan will focus on addressing challenges such as traffic congestion, infrastructure gaps and future urban expansion while developing a globally competitive ecosystem for technology-driven industries.
Officials have begun identifying suitable land parcels for the project and assessing future employment potential to prepare a long-term development roadmap. The objective is to ensure that infrastructure development keeps pace with industrial expansion and the anticipated growth of the technology sector.
The project will be implemented under the guidance of Industries Department Principal Secretary Dr P. Anbalagan, with various departments coordinating to finalise the project’s framework and execution plan.
PMRDA has also appointed a dedicated nodal officer to monitor the project and coordinate with various government agencies. The state government is also planning to develop a strong ‘Brand Pune’ identity to position the city as a preferred destination for global technology companies, research institutions and innovation-driven industries.
Taking inspiration from Bengaluru, the government is also considering a dedicated technology summit in Pune to showcase the region’s strengths in information technology, innovation, research and advanced manufacturing.
The proposed Innovation Hub is expected to strengthen Pune’s position as one of India’s leading centres for technology, startups and knowledge-based industries. The initiative could also create large-scale employment opportunities and attract domestic and global investments to the region.
