Pune Rain Alert: Panshet Dam 98% Full, Water Release Into Mutha River to Increase Tonight

Pune, 28th July 2026: The Water Resources Department has announced increased water discharge from Panshet and Khadakwasla dams into the Mutha River amid continuous heavy rainfall and rising inflows in the catchment areas.

In an advisory issued on Tuesday, the Executive Engineer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, Pune, said Panshet Dam was 98% full as of 9 pm on July 28.

“Panshet Dam is currently 98% full. Continuous rainfall is being recorded in the catchment area, resulting in significant inflows into the reservoir,” the Executive Engineer said.

He said the department had started releasing 600 cusecs through the hydroelectric power house to regulate the water storage.

“Considering the inflow into the dam and the rainfall in the catchment area, a discharge of 600 cusecs is currently being released through the hydroelectric power house. A discharge of 1,718 cusecs through the spillway will be started at 11 pm,” he said.

The Executive Engineer also announced an increase in discharge from Khadakwasla Dam.
“Due to the rapid rise in the water level of Khadakwasla Dam and heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the discharge through the spillway into the Mutha River will be increased by 1,712 cusecs to 3,424 cusecs at 10:30 pm,” he said.

He added that the discharge could be revised depending on rainfall and inflows.

“Depending on the rainfall and inflow, the discharge may be increased or reduced again,” the Executive Engineer said.

The Water Resources Department has urged residents living along the Mutha River and in low-lying areas to exercise caution.

“Citizens are requested not to enter the riverbed. If water pumps, agricultural equipment, other materials or livestock are present in the riverbed or along the river, they should be moved to a safe location immediately,” he said.

The Executive Engineer further appealed to residents in low-lying areas to follow instructions issued by the administration and cooperate with the Water Resources Department.

“Residents should take appropriate precautions and remain vigilant. People in low-lying areas should be informed about the situation and cooperate with the Water Resources Department and the administration,” he said.
