Pune Reports Highest Food Safety Complaints; Maharashtra FDA Gets 2,000 Complaints in 15 Days

Pune, 5th August 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received nearly 2,000 complaints within a span of just 15 days in July, with complaints related to unhygienic conditions accounting for the largest share. Pune district recorded the highest number of complaints, followed by Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban and Raigad.

According to the FDA, most complaints were related to poor hygiene, violations of food safety norms, substandard food products, incorrect labelling, the sale of expired products, adulteration of milk and dairy products, and failure to maintain prescribed sanitation standards.

The department said it has been acting promptly on the complaints received. So far, investigations and necessary action have been completed in around 400 cases, while inquiries and enforcement proceedings are underway in nearly 1,000 cases. The remaining complaints are currently being verified and will be addressed in a phased manner.

To make the grievance redressal process more accessible, the FDA has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-based complaint registration system under the initiative of FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.

“The AI-based complaint registration system has been launched to make it easier for citizens to report food safety issues, and it is receiving a good response from the public. There is still a need to create greater awareness about food safety among citizens, and action is being taken on every complaint received,” Mundhe said.
The FDA expects the AI-enabled platform to speed up complaint registration and processing while encouraging more citizens to report food safety violations, thereby strengthening enforcement of food safety standards across Maharashtra.
