Pune: Sassoon Hospital Seeks 15 Acres in Yerawada for New 1,000-Bed Super Multi-Speciality Hospital
Pune, 7th August 2026: Sassoon General Hospital has proposed the allocation of 15 acres of land for the construction of a new super multi-speciality hospital, with the district administration initiating the process to identify a suitable site.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting chaired by Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi on Wednesday. Following the meeting, the Collector directed the Land Records and Revenue Department to survey the available land and submit a report within 20 days.
According to officials, the proposed hospital will have around 1,000 beds and will include a dedicated cancer hospital as part of the expansion plan. The Maharashtra Medical Education Department had earlier decided to establish the new facility and submitted a proposal to the Revenue Department seeking land.
The district administration is considering allocating 15 acres from the 138-acre Yerawada Mental Hospital campus, subject to the outcome of the land survey. While the hospital, hostel buildings and other existing infrastructure occupy part of the campus, a substantial portion of the land remains vacant.
Officials said the survey will verify the total land under possession and identify any encroachments before a final decision is taken. The administration noted that the unused government land has remained vulnerable to encroachment for several years.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital and B.J. Medical College, the Medical Superintendent of Yerawada Mental Hospital, the Tehsildar, and officials from the Revenue and Land Records departments.
Since the land belongs to the Health Department, the proposed transfer will require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the department before it can be formally allotted for the hospital project.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that Sassoon Hospital has sought 15 acres for the proposed super multi-speciality hospital and that the district administration has begun the process of identifying a suitable site.
