Pune: District Collector Orders Time-Bound Action on Black Spots, Potholes
Pune, 8th August 2026: The district administration has set strict deadlines for addressing road safety concerns, directing authorities to eliminate all identified black spots by October 10, improve accident-prone junctions within six months and make district roads pothole-free by August 31.
District collector Jitendra Dudi also directed the concerned agencies to remove encroachments along national highways and other major roads within 15 days, warning of action if they fail to comply.
The directions were issued during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee on Friday chaired by Dudi at the collectorate. Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill, superintendent engineer Bharat Kumar Baviskar and officials from various departments attended the meeting.
The administration reviewed accident-prone locations, road safety, traffic regulation, junction improvements, potholes, encroachments and road safety awareness measures. Officials discussed remedial measures for 43 black spots identified through inspections.
Dudi directed authorities to focus on permanent solutions rather than temporary measures by identifying the causes of accidents at each black spot. Road geometry, curves, junctions, lighting, signboards, road markings and other infrastructure should be inspected and necessary improvements undertaken. Speed breakers must be installed strictly according to technical standards, he said.
He also directed officials to install CCTV cameras, speed-monitoring systems and adequate lighting wherever required. Geographic mapping of accident-prone locations should be undertaken and technology used to alert motorists in advance, he said.
Improvement works at accident-prone junctions must be completed within six months, while pothole-filling work across the district should be completed by August 31. Officials were told to ensure there was no delay in implementing road safety measures.
Dudi further directed owners of encroachments along national highways and major roads to remove them voluntarily within 15 days. If the encroachments are not removed within the deadline, the concerned highway agencies should clear them immediately with police assistance, he said.
The collector also instructed agencies to strictly implement safety measures at road construction sites, including adequate signboards, directions and other precautions for motorists. Contractors and agencies responsible for failing to comply with safety standards at work sites will face action as per rules, he warned.
Officials were also directed to coordinate to ensure that road accident victims receive immediate medical treatment and to undertake widespread awareness campaigns among motorists and citizens about road safety rules.
