Chakan, 19th August 2026: Work has commenced on the construction of a 26.30-km four-lane elevated road between Talegaon and Chakan, along with a parallel road underneath it, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of January 2027, Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi said on Tuesday.

The foundation stone for the 53.20-km Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur elevated highway, aimed at easing traffic congestion in Pune’s industrial areas, was laid on July 17. The project includes a 26.30-km four-lane elevated corridor between Talegaon and Chakan, along with a parallel road below it. The total project is estimated to cost Rs 6,150 crore.

Dudi said, “Once the Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur road is completed, it will resolve around 50% of the traffic congestion problem. Work on the Talegaon-Chakan stretch has already begun. The final 800-metre stretch falls under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and land acquisition for this portion will take around six months. The road work will be completed by the end of January.”

Meanwhile, the tender for the proposed 28-km elevated corridor between Nashik Phata and Khed (Rajgurunagar) has been opened and work is expected to begin within a month, Dudi said. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the region.

“About 97% of the land required for the project has already been acquired. Land acquisition for three hectares within the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits is still pending and will be completed by the end of September. This road will be a decisive project and will provide major relief to traffic management in the Chakan area in the future,” Dudi said.

The administration is also preparing a comprehensive plan for around 500 km of roads in the Chakan MIDC area. Artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to improve traffic management, while the entire area will be brought under CCTV surveillance. The system will be managed through the Command and Control Centre of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate.

“The system will detect traffic congestion and vehicle breakdowns, enabling authorities to take immediate action. Traffic congestion will be addressed through this mechanism,” Dudi said.
