IIIT Pune, SGPGIMS Lucknow Sign MoU to Advance AI-Powered Healthcare Research
Chakan, 19th August 2026: The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Pune (IIIT Pune), and the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on artificial intelligence-driven healthcare research, innovation and education.
The agreement brings together IIIT Pune’s expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity and information technology with SGPGIMS’s clinical knowledge, medical research capabilities and healthcare infrastructure.
The MoU was signed by Professor Vineet Kansal, Director of IIIT Pune, and Dr R. K. Dhiman, Director of SGPGIMS, Lucknow.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will undertake joint research projects in areas such as AI-assisted diagnostics, health-data analytics and technology-enabled patient care. The partnership will also facilitate exchanges involving faculty members and students, enabling interdisciplinary learning and research exposure.
Both institutions will share research facilities, laboratories, datasets, clinical expertise and technological infrastructure to accelerate research. They also plan to jointly organise workshops, conferences and training programmes to promote collaboration between medical and technology professionals.
Professor Kansal said the partnership was a step towards building a healthier India through smarter technology. He said AI and data science could become powerful tools for medical professionals, enabling faster diagnoses, improved outcomes and more accessible healthcare.
Dr Dhiman said world-class patient care must be supported by rigorous research and innovation. The collaboration would help bring AI and advanced data science into clinical practice, allowing medical professionals to diagnose diseases earlier, deliver more precise treatment and improve patient care, he added.
According to the institutions, the partnership seeks to address some of the major challenges facing India’s healthcare sector, including expanding access to quality care, managing complex diseases, containing rising costs and serving a growing number of patients.
The collaboration also supports the country’s digital-health goals under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 framework.
