Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro Is Ready: Why Pune Commuters Still Have to Wait
Hinjawadi, 22nd August 2026: The first phase of the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor is ready to begin passenger services, but commuters will have to wait until the official inauguration date is finalised. The project has received the required safety clearance, and preparations for the inauguration are underway.
The 23.2-km corridor from Maan-Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar has 23 stations. The necessary technical and operational processes for starting passenger services on the first phase have been completed, and officials are now awaiting confirmation of the inauguration date.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the corridor, and his proposed Pune visit is being closely watched. September 17 and October 16 are among the dates currently being discussed. However, no date has been officially confirmed so far.
The Chief Minister’s Office has been approached regarding the inauguration, while a communication has also been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking a suitable date. Since the final schedule is yet to be confirmed, preparations are being kept ready for an inauguration by either the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister.
The Metro corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Hinjawadi, Wakad, Balewadi, Baner and Shivajinagar. It is particularly important for thousands of employees working in Hinjawadi’s IT companies and is expected to reduce dependence on road transport and ease traffic congestion along the corridor.
Multiple Dates Considered Earlier
The Metro’s inauguration has been delayed several times, with different dates discussed over the past few months. Passenger services on the first 12 stations were initially expected to begin in June. June 15, July 15 and August 15 were subsequently discussed as possible inauguration dates.
With the project now ready and safety clearance in place, attention has shifted to September and October. Commuters are now waiting for final confirmation of the inauguration date and the start of passenger services.
