Sukeli Khind Toll Plaza on Mumbai-Goa Highway Cancelled
Alibag, 22nd August 2026: In a major relief for commuters travelling along the Mumbai-Goa Highway, the proposed toll plaza at Sukeli Khind in Raigad will not be operationalised, Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare said on Thursday.
The toll plaza was nearing completion, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) reportedly preparing to begin toll collection after the Ganesh festival. However, the proposal faced strong opposition from residents, commuters and transporters in the Konkan region.
Tatkare said he met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and raised the issue of the Sukeli toll plaza. According to Tatkare, Gadkari assured him that the toll plaza would not be made operational.
The proposed toll plaza had sparked controversy over the distance between toll plazas. Under the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, toll plazas are generally expected to be located about 60 kilometres apart. However, the proposed Sukeli toll plaza is around 47.7 kilometres from the existing Khalapur toll plaza, leading to objections from local residents and public representatives.
According to NHAI officials, the approximately 84-kilometre stretch between Palaspe and Indapur has been divided into two sections Palaspe to Kasu and Kasu to Indapur and two toll plazas had therefore been proposed on the route.
The decision not to operationalise the Sukeli toll plaza is expected to provide significant relief to commuters and transporters, particularly ahead of the Ganesh festival, when traffic towards Konkan increases substantially.
