Man Posing as Military Intelligence Captain Arrested for Cheating Army Personnel

Pune/Jodhpur, 24th August 2026: A joint team of the Indian Army’s Military Intelligence unit and Jodhpur Police arrested a 26-year-old man on August 23 for allegedly impersonating a Military Intelligence officer and defrauding Army personnel and civilians across several states.
The accused, identified as Sagar Guleria, is a resident of Ujala Nagar in Jalandhar, Punjab. Officials described him as an alleged Army deserter who had been posing as a Captain associated with Military Intelligence.
According to Jodhpur East Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Choudhary, IPS, the police received information from the Army’s Military Intelligence unit in Jodhpur that a man wearing a Captain’s uniform was moving around the Army area and Ratanada. Another man in civilian clothes was reportedly accompanying him, and officials suspected they might be planning to commit an offence.
Considering the seriousness of the information, Jodhpur Police Commissioner Anshuman Bhomia ordered an operation. It was conducted under the direction of Jodhpur East Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Choudhary and the close supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Narendra Singh and Assistant Commissioner of Police Harjiram.
A special team was formed under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Khet Singh, in-charge of Jodhpur East’s District Special Team. Acting on the Military Intelligence input, the team searched the Ratanada area and traced Guleria to Sukh Sagar Restaurant in Ratanada, where he was detained while allegedly wearing an Army officer’s uniform.
Police team involved in operation
The team comprised Inspector Zulfikar, Station House Officer of Ratanada police station; Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhawani Singh of Ratanada police station; Sub-Inspector Khet Singh, in-charge of the Jodhpur East District Special Team; and Sub-Inspector Rakesh Singh, in-charge of the Jodhpur East Cyber Cell.
The other personnel involved were Constables Ramlal, Gopichand, Constable Ajit and Ramniwas of the Jodhpur East District Special Team, along with Constable Devendra of the Jodhpur East Cyber Cell.
Loan-subsidy fraud
During preliminary questioning, investigators allegedly found that Guleria had posed as an Army officer and cheated Army personnel of crores of rupees by promising to arrange loans carrying substantial subsidies. Cases involving women allegedly defrauded by him have also emerged, police said.
Investigators said Guleria allegedly approached serving Army personnel while posing as a Captain and offered to help them secure loans with heavy subsidies purportedly available through the Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF).
After a loan was credited to a victim’s account, the victim was allegedly instructed to transfer the money to bank accounts controlled by Guleria or his associates. He purportedly claimed that the transfer was required to process the subsidy and that the subsidised amount would subsequently be returned.
In one case registered in Panchkula, an Army naik and his wife were allegedly defrauded of ₹17.5 lakh after transferring their loan amount for the purported processing of a subsidy. Guleria had previously been arrested by the Panchkula Economic Offences Wing in connection with the case.
In another case reported in Gujarat, an Army personnel posted in Bhuj was allegedly defrauded of ₹15.5 lakh after being offered a heavily subsidised loan.
Police said cases linked to the accused had been registered in Bhuj in Gujarat, SAS Nagar in Punjab and Siliguri in West Bengal. He was also reportedly wanted or named in fraud cases in several other states and Union Territories, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh.
Preliminary verification reportedly revealed seven online cybercrime complaints involving transactions worth lakhs of rupees linked to bank accounts allegedly used by the accused. Police also found eight online cybercrime complaints associated with mobile numbers allegedly used by him.
Uniform and documents recovered
Officials said the joint team recovered an allegedly fake identity card, an Army uniform and other material from Guleria. Several suspected fraudulent documents were also reportedly found on his mobile phone.
Police are analysing the recovered digital evidence, bank-account details and documents to identify other victims and determine whether more people were involved in the alleged fraud network.
Further investigation is underway.
