Pune: PMPML Board Focuses on Passenger Safety; Approves Senior Discount and Accident Aid
Pune, 24th August 2026: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) board has approved a 50% discount on bus passes for citizens aged above 60, while also deciding to provide financial assistance of up to Rs 1 lakh to those injured in PMPML bus accidents and up to Rs 3 lakh to the families of those killed.
The decisions were taken at a board meeting on Monday, where passenger safety, fleet efficiency, compensation for accident victims, employee issues, new buses, feeder services, tenders and financial compliance were discussed.
Pimpri Chinchwad Mayor Ravi Landge and Standing Committee chairman Abhishek Barane attended the meeting and raised issues concerning public transport in the city.
The 50% concession on bus passes is expected to provide financial relief to senior citizens in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and encourage greater use of public transport.
The board also discussed installing dashcams in both PMPML-owned and hired buses to ensure objective recording of incidents inside buses and along routes, particularly in the event of accidents or other untoward incidents.
Under the new compensation policy, a person injured in a PMPML bus accident will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs 1 lakh, while the legal heirs of a person killed in an accident will receive up to Rs 3 lakh. Compensation for property damage will be paid based on government assessment.
The board also reviewed plans to procure new buses, rationalise services according to passenger demand, strengthen feeder services connecting with the Metro and other public transport systems, and reduce bus breakdowns.
The board also discussed pending employee-related issues, including implementation of the pension scheme for eligible employees in accordance with a High Court order and administrative matters concerning retired employees.
It also approved the reinstatement of 37 employees.
Administrative and financial matters, including tender procedures, statutory audits, annual compliance reports, GST, TDS, professional tax and compliance with the Registrar of Companies (ROC), were also reviewed.
Landge said the 50% concession would make daily travel more affordable for senior citizens, while the accident compensation policy would provide passengers with greater financial protection.
Barane said the authorities must focus on increasing the fleet, strengthening feeder services, reducing breakdowns and using modern technology to improve passenger safety.
The meeting stressed the need to improve PMPML’s overall efficiency with a focus on passenger safety, service quality and passenger welfare, and called for coordinated efforts by the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic bodies and the transport undertaking.
