Pune: PMPML Bus Accidents Raise Safety Concerns; 11 Deaths Reported in Five Months

Pune, 25th August 2026: Safety concerns have intensified over the operation of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses after 23 bus-related accidents claimed 11 lives between April and August. According to PMPML data, nine of the fatalities were reportedly linked to buses operated by private contractors.

Of the 23 accidents recorded during the five-month period, 10 people sustained serious injuries. Contractor-operated buses accounted for the majority of the incidents, with 16 accidents resulting in nine deaths and seven serious injuries.

In comparison, PMPML-owned buses were involved in seven accidents, in which two people died and three were seriously injured.

PMPML currently has around 684 buses in its own fleet and 2,364 drivers, while approximately 1,277 buses are operated on a contractual basis with 3,214 drivers. All electric buses in the PMPML fleet are also operated through private contractors.

Sources said that in a recent accident, a 22-year-old driver was reportedly operating a bus taken on contract by PMPML, raising further questions about driver experience, training and safety monitoring.

PMPML has been conducting a driver-training programme since April 2025, covering safe driving practices, emergency response procedures and counselling. However, the rising number of fatal accidents involving contractor-operated buses has prompted concerns over the effectiveness of existing safety measures.

PMPML has also proposed compensation of up to ₹3 lakh in the event of an accident, as authorities face growing pressure to strengthen safety standards and accountability among private contractors.
