Pune: PMC Plans Road Widening From Katraj Chowk to Gujarwadi Phata to Ease Traffic Congestion
Katraj, 28th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated steps to widen the road between Katraj Chowk and Gujarwadi Phata to ease traffic congestion along the busy Satara Road corridor.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Special) Omprakash Divte has directed officials to conduct a survey of the road, which falls within the limits of the newly merged villages, and determine its width as per the city’s Development Plan (DP).
A joint site inspection was conducted in Ward 38 on Friday in the presence of elected representatives and civic officials to assess the proposed road-widening requirements.
The Satara Road corridor is one of the city’s major routes and carries heavy traffic. During the inspection, officials concluded that widening the Katraj Chowk-Gujarwadi Phata stretch is necessary to improve traffic movement.
The Building Department has been instructed to conduct a survey in accordance with the Development Plan and mark the proposed road width on the ground.
Land acquisition and encroachment action
The PMC’s Land Acquisition Department has been directed to initiate the process of acquiring properties falling within the proposed road-widening alignment.
The Road Department has also been instructed to prepare a detailed estimate covering the road-widening and development works after the required land is secured.
The concerned regional office has been asked to take action against encroachments falling within the proposed road width.
Trees and forest land to be assessed
Officials have also been directed to conduct a survey of trees that may come in the way of the road-widening project and submit the necessary proposals for their removal, wherever required.
If any portion of forest department-owned land falls within the proposed alignment, the Road Department will coordinate with the Forest Department and initiate the required correspondence.
Power lines, poles may be shifted
Electricity infrastructure could also pose an obstruction to the widening project. Officials have therefore been instructed to submit proposals to shift MSEDCL power lines underground wherever they fall within the proposed road width.
Proposals will also be prepared for relocating electricity poles at locations where they interfere with the road-widening work.
The civic administration has additionally directed officials to develop the required stormwater drainage network along the widened road to ensure proper rainwater discharge.
Divte directed officials to prepare a comprehensive estimate covering all aspects of the Katraj Chowk-Gujarwadi Phata road-widening project and subsequently initiate the tendering process.
The site inspection was attended by members Vyankoji Khopde, Pratibha Tai Chorghe, Sandeep Beldare and Yuvraj Beldare, along with PMC officials including Road Department Superintendent Engineer Ajay Wayse, Executive Engineers Suresh Sakhale and Santosh Lanjekar from the Building Department, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the Dhankawadi-Katraj-Ambegaon Regional Office Surekha Bhanage, Road Department Deputy Engineer Venkatesh Indraksh, Land Acquisition Department Deputy Engineer Digambar Bangar, and other officials and staff.
