Bhawani Peth, 28th August 2026: The Pune division of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) organised a guidance workshop for mutton and chicken retailers under the state’s “Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra” campaign.
The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Shri Lakshmibazar Pratishthan Trust and held at Shri Lakshmibazar Sanskrutik Bhavan in Bhawani Peth on August 27. Around 200 food business operators from Pune and nearby areas attended the programme.
Officials provided detailed guidance on food safety and hygiene at meat and chicken shops. Topics included personal hygiene, cleanliness of business premises and equipment, safe handling and storage of raw and prepared food, temperature control, access to clean water, waste disposal and pest control.
Retailers were also informed about the licences and registrations required to operate food businesses. Officials explained the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations framed under it.
The participants were instructed to maintain prescribed cleanliness and safety standards at their establishments and ensure that customers receive safe, hygienic and good-quality meat and chicken products.

D.V. Bhogawade, Joint Commissioner (Food), Pune Division, and Narayan Sarkate, Assistant Commissioner (Food), FDA Pune, addressed the retailers. Food Safety Officer Satish Hake provided information about mandatory food-safety requirements and legal provisions.
The workshop was held under the guidance of Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.
The participating retailers welcomed the initiative and expressed their commitment to providing customers with safe and hygienic products. Officials said such awareness and guidance programmes would improve compliance among food businesses and help citizens access safer food.
The FDA warned that strict action would be taken against establishments found violating food-safety regulations. Customers can report concerns regarding food quality or hygiene through the administration’s toll-free number, 1800-222-365.
