Pune: Kondhwa Police Intensify Tenant Verification Drive; 25 Cases Registered Against Landlords

Kondhwa, 28th August 2026: The Kondhwa Police have intensified tenant and worker verification drives across areas including Ashraf Nagar, Shivneri Nagar, Kakade Vasti and Bhagyoday Nagar under the “Our Kondhwa, Safe Kondhwa” campaign.
The police have appealed to landlords, housing societies and commercial establishments to complete police verification and maintain proper records of people staying or working on their premises.
According to Santosh Khetmalas, Senior Police Inspector, Kondhwa Police Station, a large number of people from outside Pune come to the area for employment in hotels, shops, bakeries and other businesses. In some cases, landlords allegedly do not maintain adequate information about their tenants, collect identity documents or verify their backgrounds.
“Due to the large number of people coming to Kondhwa for employment, we are carrying out search and combing operations from time to time. We have appealed to flat, house and bungalow owners who rent out their properties to ensure that police verification of every tenant is completed,” Khetmalas said.
As part of the campaign, the police have reminded landlords about the requirement to provide tenant information to the police under Section 24 of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999.
Police officials said that failure to provide the required information within the stipulated period can lead to registration of a case under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, as applicable.
Khetmalas said that 25 cases have been registered in the past month against property owners for allegedly failing to provide proper tenant information or complete the required police verification.
Police also verify workers at commercial establishments
The verification drive is also being extended to workers employed at hotels, bakeries and other commercial establishments within the Kondhwa Police Station jurisdiction.
Business owners have been advised to maintain details of their workers and employees and submit the required information to the police.
During periodic search and combing operations, police have also identified individuals with alleged criminal backgrounds, officials said. Ground-level checks have also led to the identification of foreign nationals allegedly staying in the area with expired passports, following which action was initiated as per law.
The police have also appealed to housing society chairpersons and secretaries to ensure that tenants entering residential societies have completed the required police verification. Officials warned that action may be taken under applicable laws if tenants are permitted to occupy premises without verification.
Police further clarified that even when tenant verification is completed online, a copy of the verification should also be submitted to the concerned police station.
Police caution against ‘heavy deposits’
The Kondhwa Police have also reminded landlords that collecting a “heavy deposit” from tenants is not permitted under the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999.
Khetmalas appealed to owners of flats, houses and bungalows who rent out their properties to complete tenant verification and provide accurate information to the police.
“Unknown persons staying in Kondhwa without police verification will face action. We are regularly conducting search and combing operations, and I appeal to all property owners to cooperate with the police and complete the required verification,” Inspector Khetmalas said.
According to the Kondhwa Police, the verification drive is aimed at strengthening security in the area and identifying individuals with criminal backgrounds or those allegedly staying without proper documentation.
