Chakan May Get Separate Municipal Corporation as Traffic, Infrastructure Woes Mount

Pune, 31st August 2026: A long-pending proposal to establish a separate municipal corporation covering the rapidly developing industrial belt of Chakan, Alandi, Khed-Rajgurunagar and around 50 neighbouring villages has once again come into focus amid worsening traffic congestion and growing pressure on civic infrastructure.

The proposal has reportedly been pending with the Maharashtra government for nearly one and a half years. It is expected to receive renewed attention as Chakan continues to grapple with severe traffic bottlenecks, inadequate civic amenities and rapid urbanisation.

Chakan has emerged as one of Maharashtra’s major industrial hubs, attracting several domestic and international companies. However, civic infrastructure development has struggled to keep pace with rapid industrial growth and population expansion.

Residents and industries in the region face several challenges, including traffic congestion, deteriorating roads, inadequate water supply, poor sewage management and insufficient waste disposal infrastructure.

Traffic Congestion Affecting Industries
The worsening traffic situation in Chakan has also raised concerns among industries operating in the region. Heavy congestion affects the movement of workers, goods and logistics, adding to operational challenges for businesses.

There have also been discussions about some companies reconsidering their operations in the area due to persistent infrastructure and connectivity issues.

Local municipal councils and gram panchayats have limited financial resources and administrative capacity to meet the growing requirements of the rapidly urbanising region. Managing large-scale infrastructure projects, roads, traffic, sanitation and waste management has increasingly become a challenge for the existing local bodies.

Expansion of PMC, PCMC Considered Difficult
The possibility of merging additional villages into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) or Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is reportedly being viewed as difficult, as both civic bodies have already undergone significant boundary expansions and incorporated several villages in recent years.

Against this backdrop, the proposal for an independent municipal corporation catering specifically to the Chakan industrial and urban belt has emerged as an alternative.

The proposed civic body could include the municipal councils of Chakan, Alandi and Khed-Rajgurunagar, along with approximately 50 surrounding villages.

Recommendation for Independent Civic Body
According to information available, the PMC, PCMC, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Pune district administration have expressed a favourable view regarding the formation of a separate municipal corporation.

A recommendation has reportedly been made to establish an independent civic body by bringing together the three municipal councils and neighbouring villages under a unified administrative structure.

Supporters of the proposal believe that a dedicated municipal corporation could help streamline urban planning, improve infrastructure investment and address the unique challenges of one of Pune district’s fastest-growing industrial corridors.

With traffic congestion and civic infrastructure issues continuing to intensify, the pending proposal is likely to remain a significant subject of discussion in the coming months.
