Pune Metro Ridership Crosses 74 Lakh in August, Highest This Year

Pune, 2nd September 2026: Pune Metro recorded its highest monthly ridership of the year in August, with more than 74.24 lakh passengers using the network. The figure marks the first time in nearly a year that monthly ridership has crossed the 70-lakh mark, despite August having no major festival-related boost, officials said.

Metro ridership had last crossed the 70-lakh mark in September 2025, when Ganeshotsav and the closure of several central city roads pushed passenger numbers to a record 75.92 lakh for the month. Thereafter, daily ridership settled at around two lakh, keeping monthly numbers close to 60 lakh until June this year.

The recovery began in July, when monthly ridership crossed 65 lakh, followed by a further jump in August. The highest daily ridership last month was recorded on August 27, when more than 2.65 lakh passengers travelled by Metro. Heavy passenger traffic was also recorded on the day of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s event near the AISSMS campus.

Maha Metro currently operates 33 train sets across its two operational corridors. Twelve train sets operate 540 one-way trips on the Swargate-Pimpri-Chinchwad corridor, while 13 train sets operate 541 one-way trips on the Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor.

Pune Railway Station, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune Municipal Corporation, Swargate and Ramwadi are among the network’s busiest stations.

Officials expect ridership to increase further with the opening of the third corridor between Shivajinagar and Hinjawadi. Maha Metro has already placed orders for additional train sets to cater to the anticipated increase in passenger numbers.

The sustained rise in ridership in the absence of a major festival-driven surge has raised hopes among officials that Metro usage could continue to grow in the coming months.
