Nepal Floods: Maharashtra Rescue Centre Steps In to Help Families Trace Missing Relatives

Pune, 2nd September 2026: The Maharashtra Mountaineers Rescue Coordination Centre (MMRCC) has launched a statewide campaign to assist families whose relatives remain missing following the recent floods in Nepal.

The initiative was undertaken at the request of the Maharashtra government, according to a press release issued by the Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh (AMGM), under which the rescue coordination centre operates.

Through AMGM’s network of district associations, the MMRCC will inform affected families about the identification process being conducted by the Nepal government in coordination with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu. It will also collect details of missing people and consolidate the information for coordination with the Maharashtra government.

The organisation said the disaster had affected hundreds of families in Maharashtra, many of whom were still awaiting information about their missing relatives.

“Timely and accurate information is crucial to help families move beyond prolonged uncertainty and proceed with the identification process,” the MMRCC said.

The MMRCC stressed that identifying bodies, particularly in cases requiring DNA matching, is a time-sensitive process. The sooner information about families and DNA samples reaches the appropriate authorities, the sooner the identification process can begin, it said.

The MMRCC said its experience in Nepal’s mountainous regions, along with its statewide network, would help connect families in remote parts of Maharashtra with the official identification process being conducted in Kathmandu.

The organisation has asked families whose immediate relatives are missing to check the Nepal Police disaster database for photographs and details of recovered bodies.

Regardless of whether they are able to identify their relatives through the database, families have been advised to complete the official online form circulated by the MMRCC. In cases where visual identification is not possible, Nepalese authorities will facilitate DNA matching with immediate family members, according to the release.

“All information submitted by families will be kept strictly confidential and used only for identifying missing persons and facilitating the handover of bodies in coordination with the Maharashtra government,” the MMRCC said.
