Pune: Hinjewadi Merger With PCMC Gets Fresh Push, CM Fadnavis Says Decision Soon
Pune, 3rd September 2026: Hinjewadi will soon be brought under the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, signalling a fresh push to resolve the long-pending proposal for the merger of village along with six other villages in the region.
Speaking at an event organised by a news channel in Mumbai, Fadnavis said a decision on Hinjewadi would be taken shortly and that bringing the area under the PCMC was necessary for better civic management and regular development works.
“We are going to take a decision for Hinjewadi very soon. We are going to make Hinjewadi part of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation so that regular works can be done and better management can be ensured,” he said.
The proposed merger covers Hinjewadi, Maan, Marunji, Nere, Jambe, Sangvi and parts of adjoining areas. Their inclusion would add around 56.72 sq km to the PCMC’s jurisdiction, taking its total area to approximately 237.72 sq km.
Hinjewadi, which houses a major IT hub employing a large number of people, has for years faced infrastructure and civic issues amid fragmented jurisdiction involving the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and local gram panchayats. Traffic congestion, inadequate roads, water shortages and waste management have been among the major concerns.
The merger proposal has been pending with the state Urban Development Department for nearly a decade. The PCMC general body had approved the inclusion of the seven villages in February 2015 and forwarded the proposal to the state government in June that year. A report containing the Divisional Commissioner’s opinion was submitted in November 2020, but the proposal did not reach a final decision.
The merger has also faced opposition in some of the villages, with residents earlier demanding the creation of a separate municipal corporation. However, residents of Jambe and Sangvi have supported the proposal.
Officials said the Chief Minister’s latest announcement has revived the proposal and could pave the way for its implementation after years of delay.
