Pune: Murlidhar Mohol Condemns Assault on Vidyanand Bapat, Says Violence Cannot Be Justified Over Differences of Opinion

Pune, 3rd September 2026: Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Vidyanand Bapat, who has been vocal against the unrestricted use of DJs and loudspeakers during Ganeshotsav celebrations in Pune.

The incident occurred on Thursday on Tilak Road, where Bapat was allegedly assaulted while speaking to the media about his opposition to high-volume sound systems and DJs during public celebrations. Pune Crime Branch later took the accused, Santosh Chavan, into custody.

Reacting to the incident, Mohol said that differences of opinion were natural, but violence could never be an acceptable response to someone’s views.

“People can hold different opinions on an issue. If one does not agree with another person’s views, the response should be through dialogue and ideological discussion. Raising a hand against someone for expressing their opinion can never be justified under any circumstances,” Mohol said.

Bapat has maintained his stand against the unrestricted use of DJs and loudspeakers, raising concerns over noise pollution and advocating adherence to prescribed sound limits during public celebrations.

Mohol said he had spoken to the Pune Police Commissioner and sought strict action in the matter. He added that the accused had been arrested and a non-bailable offence registered. Mohol further said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had directed authorities to provide police protection to Bapat.

The incident has once again brought the debate over noise pollution, public celebrations and the right to express differing views into focus.
