Pune: PMC Hospitals to Get 10 New Ventilators, 10 CPAP Machines for Newborn Care
Pune, 3rd September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved an expenditure of Rs 3.98 crore to procure 10 new ventilators and 10 CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at three civic hospitals in the city.
The equipment will be provided to Kamala Nehru Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Hospital and Chandumama Sonawane Maternity Home, with the aim of strengthening critical care facilities for newborns.
The proposal was tabled before the PMC Standing Committee by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. Standing Committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said the committee had approved the proposal.
According to the civic administration, PMC hospitals currently face a shortage of ventilators required for treating critically ill newborns. As a result, some infants in serious condition have to be referred to Sassoon General Hospital, causing additional difficulties for parents and relatives.
The administration said that improving neonatal care facilities at civic hospitals was necessary, particularly in view of the rising cost of treatment at private hospitals.
The Medical Superintendent of Kamala Nehru Hospital had sought both types of equipment. The administration, however, noted that following the regular tender process could take around a month.
Considering the urgent need for neonatal treatment, the PMC has proposed procuring the equipment directly through quotations without inviting a tender, under Section 67(3)(c) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act.
The expenditure will be met from the Rs 10 crore provision for equipment and machinery in the PMC Budget for 2026-27. Of this allocation, Rs 3.98 crore will be spent on the ventilators and CPAP machines.
The Standing Committee has also approved the execution of the necessary agreement and payment of the procurement bills.
