New Delhi, 4th September 2026: A Delhi consumer disputes redressal commission has directed Zomato to pay ₹8,250.61 to a customer after finding the food delivery platform guilty of deficiency in service over the cancellation of two food orders worth ₹250.61.

The case was filed by Manoj Kumar, a Zomato Gold customer, who had placed five separate orders in August 2024 for his niece’s birthday celebration. While three orders were delivered successfully, two orders worth ₹146.73 and ₹103.88 were cancelled and were not delivered.

Kumar told the commission that Zomato cancelled the two orders on the grounds that his phone was not reachable. He further alleged that the platform refused to refund the amount and instead deducted cancellation charges.

The commission, however, questioned Zomato’s explanation. It noted that three other orders had been successfully delivered to the same address during the same period, making the claim that the customer could not be contacted difficult to accept.

According to the proceedings, Zomato did not appear before the commission or submit its written response within the prescribed period. The matter therefore proceeded ex parte against the company.

The commission held that Zomato’s failure to deliver the orders and the deduction of cancellation charges amounted to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.

Zomato has been directed to refund ₹250.61 along with 6% annual interest, pay ₹5,000 as compensation for mental agony, harassment and humiliation, and another ₹3,000 towards litigation costs. The total amount comes to ₹8,250.61.

The commission has directed Zomato to comply with the order within 45 days of receiving it.
