Pune: Woman Dies After Iron Stage Structure Falls on Her During Dahi Handi Event in Sangvi

Pune, 5th September 2026: A 45-year-old woman died after an iron angle from a stage structure fell on her while a Dahi Handi event was being concluded in Old Sangvi on Friday night.

The incident took place between 10.30 pm and 10.45 pm at the venue of the Vighnaharta Dahi Handi Mitra Mandal on Lane No. 2 in Old Sangvi. According to police, the Dahi Handi was broken at around 10.05 pm, following which workers began dismantling the stage arch.

The woman, identified as Salma Pathan, had arrived at the venue along with her husband, Salauddin Pathan, to watch the Dahi Handi celebrations. After the event ended, her husband asked her to return home. While she was leaving the venue, an iron angle from the stage arch being dismantled fell on her, seriously injuring her.

She was taken to Aundh Hospital for treatment where she died from her injuries.

Police said Salma’s son was a worker with the Vighnaharta Dahi Handi Mitra Mandal. Her husband, son and other relatives have so far declined to lodge a complaint in connection with the incident.

The Sangvi police have registered the case as an accidental death and are conducting further investigation. Police said appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
