Pune: No Rain, Yet Road Falls Apart Within 48 Hours of Repairs in Model Colony

Pune, 5th September 2026: Questions over the quality of road repair work have resurfaced after a stretch near B.M. Thorat Chowk in Model Colony deteriorated within just 48 hours of being asphalted, despite there being no rainfall during the period.

The road had been dug up for laying a drinking water pipeline. After the pipeline work was completed, the excavated portion was filled and asphalted by a contractor around two days ago. However, the newly laid asphalt has already peeled off, leaving behind loose stones and potholes.

The rapid deterioration has raised questions over the quality of the material used, the asphalting process and the workmanship. Citizens have pointed out that while road damage during the monsoon is often attributed to rain, the road in this case began crumbling despite dry weather.

According to residents, the asphalt started coming off soon after traffic resumed on the repaired stretch. Within hours, potholes appeared and chunks of the newly laid material were scattered across the road, prompting demands for an investigation into the work.

The development comes after Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram had directed officials to inspect the quality of roads that had been repaired earlier. Following complaints regarding the Model Colony stretch, a panchnama of the contractor’s work has been carried out.

While municipal officials are responsible for ensuring the quality of road works, the incident has also raised questions over whether adequate quality checks were conducted after the asphalting was completed.

Residents have expressed anger over roads being repeatedly repaired using public funds only to deteriorate within days. They have demanded that the quality of the work be thoroughly examined and responsibility fixed on the contractor and officials responsible for monitoring the work.
